What does direct email look like Well, it's very likely to be personalized. That is, the receipient's name and other tailored information from your database will appear in the body of the email message. (Read below about mail merging to see how to do this.) In addition, you will want to give every receipient an opt-out (unsubscribe), an election not to receive future direct emails. You could add to your direct emailing list by contacting eBay bidders on products similar to the ones you are selling and somehow get these bidders' email addresses. That is clearly in violation of eBay rules if you use addresses to do emailings that attempt to undermine other sellers' auctions or avoid eBay fees. It's not so clear that it's a violation if you solicit such prospective buyers well after the auction is over with a routine emailing. However, in that case it would be spam, which is also an eBay rules violation. Is it a violation of eBay rules if you send direct email to eBay members who have...
Many mailing lists and newsgroups permit self-promotion. Find a group that features your type of items and post a bit of promotion. Advertising works best if you have your own Web site. Your site, which should be the hub for your sales, can give you an identity and level of professionalism that makes your business more official in the eyes of buyers. In Chapter 8, we detail the ins and outs of business sites on the Web.
The SRDS is a superb resource for the home business. It is very expensive to own so go to your library and find it. Believe me, it's worth the hunt. Trade journals can be an incredible source for ideas and products and the SRDS has an extensive list of these. It also has sections on consumer magazines, international magazines, business publications, mailing lists and newspapers.
Yahoo before signing up for any mailing lists or newsletters. Some Web sites that offer these publications make most of their money by selling your e-mail address to spammers. If you give them an anonymous e-mail address, the buckets of spam will never end up in your real mailbox. (I learned about that the hard way.)
Did you know that with as few as 100 subscribers to a newsletter you could start earning cash by selling advertising space or by doing simple joint ventures that cost you NOTHING Those are only two of the many ways to create income from a newsletter. You don't have to stick stamps on your newsletter and mail it out. You can turn your newsletter into an email and call it an ezine . No need for fancy HTML in your newsletter either - some of my favorite ezines come as plain text. There are many email users out there that HATE HTML email - it takes up too much memory and takes too long to load for some readers. I actually surveyed my email list when it was at around 8,000 members and I found that 85 of my readers preferred to get a plain text newsletter over an HTML newsletter. email tracking system that you sign up for allows you to blast a message to your list. Did you know that you could have a list of 100 subscribers VERY QUICKLY by selling a product on eBay that is of interest to the...
Visit department stores, hardware stores, gardening and auto-supply stores. Go to the mall. Get on mailing lists and look at catalogs. Go to trade shows. Read lots of consumer magazines and study the ads. Meet new people. Make some phone calls. E-mail write some letters. Try new foods, new hobbies, new sports.
When you rent mailing lists or do any advertising, all that expense (or, depending how you look at it- investment) should have one goal and one goal only-- getting and keeping a new customer. Because the real profits of any business are REPEAT SALES, not one-time sales. If you're like most small businesses just starting out, you buy a mailing list and send out flyers or postcards or letters or put up a web site, and try to draw traffic to your site. If you get enough traffic, hopefully, you'll get a few customers too.
There are many booksellers and glass dealers and other antique dealers who only do business by mail. Get on as many mailing lists and ask for as many catalogs as you can. You will find bargains from time to time and it's worth getting the catalogs even if you never buy anything because they provide important market information and descriptions of items.
In the vein of membership having its privileges, the more skin you have in your eBay Store subscription, the greater the number of free e-mail messages you can send per month. The number of e-mails is determined by how many subscribers you have in each mailing list that you select to broadcast during a month
I didn't start out as an eBay expert. Nobody handed me a list of 10,000 email names. I started with one name. Less than a year later I had a mailing list that was growing by over 120 people per day and two years later it's growing even faster with no end in sight. Experiment with the price, and solicit feedback from your buyers. Ask them what they think of your product - stay in touch with them and give them updates to your info product. Keep them on your email mailing list (they will buy from you again if they know and trust you). newsletter, what topics they want to read etc.) I give them what they want, and they reward me by loyally reading the newsletter and buying the products I recommend. It's a great arrangement If you are familiar with statistics you know that when surveying a group of people you don't have to ask the entire group their opinion. A small random sample will give you a fairly accurate image of what the group thinks. For example, if I survey 100 of my subscribers...

-Offer a free special report accessed by your customers via autoresponder that gives them free information about a topic of interest and also includes an affiliate link to the product -When customers join your mailing list you can contact them with valuable information of interest to them along with links to affiliate products you endorse.
You could also ask visitors to your about me page to send you an email if they are interested in your newsletter - I'll talk more about that in the Newsletters chapter (Chapter 10). (A sneak peek You can't specifically SELL a product with your about me page. You can't be that direct because of eBay's policies. You can grow a mailing list though and make a lot of money with a simple list of email addresses of people that all have a common interest.) If it doesn't sell, I'll bet you could use that list of names to help a travel agency sell fishing vacation packages. You could work out a deal where they give you 20 of every vacation package they set up with one of your referrals from your mailing list. You simply send out a mailing to your list with a special offer code and the phone number of the travel agency. Are you starting to see the potential here A mailing list that consists of people with similar interests can be used in many ways that benefit both the reader and the list owner.
It would be nice if marketing for your ebook simply happened on its own -but it doesn't. You have to do it yourself. After you've promoted your ebook to the people on your own mailing list (if you have one), then you have to contact other Website owners and persuade them to be your affiliates. You should do this continually.
-I use GetResponse as my auto-responder on 321tix.com. Another nice opt-in, opt-out email service is mail-list.com or aweber.com. Here's the link to the service I use Many great books, websites, newsletters and services are already on the Internet and are desperately looking for new buyers, visitors, and subscribers. Your first 'Silent Sales Machine' on eBay could simply be a matter of finding a way to channel your eBay traffic into any of those pre-established affiliate systems. There is more information on affiliate systems in Chapter 10. Here's the plan - talk to the owner of the NFL Digest and ask him if he is willing to pay you for subscribers to his newsletter. Chances are he will be very interested in talking to you. You then offer your eBay visitors the opportunity to join the NFL Digest newsletter via your eBay about me page using the techniques we've already learned. Be sure your subscribers know exactly what they are subscribing to avoid being accused of spam. Chapter 10 is...

You can easily send a follow-up email with cross-selling information in it. But with any kind of a volume of eBay retail business, that task would very quickly become burdensome and tedious. Therefore, you need an auction management service that facilitates such emails. In addition, to use the cross-promotion panel effectively, you need an auction management service that enables you to use the panel in a variety of places such as webpages, email, newsletters, and almost anywhere you can place an image.
Whatever you are selling, there's an e-mail newsletter read by your customers. Some newsletters have tens, even hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Promoting through e-mail newsletters can be incredibly effective it's a very cheap way to reach large numbers of people very quickly.
Another way to generate income if you don't have your own product is to promote affiliate programs. In the last chapter we talked a little about Clickbank.com - you can promote any of the eBooks from the entire library of Clickbank books. All of these books are begging for someone to make money on them by selling them in any creative way you can imagine. If your subscribers buy the book, your commission ranges from 5 of the sale to 50 or more. There are many other ready to sell products waiting for you to endorse and sell to your subscribers.
In addition to the cross-promotional feature available to all eBay sellers, Store owners can further highlight items using a feature called item showcase. The items will appear in Store promotional flyers you create and in marketing e-mails you send to subscribers. You can select specific items to display, or you can set criteria that choose which items to use, much like selecting criteria for cross promotions (see the previous section). Information on creating flyers and marketing e-mails in eBay Stores is covered earlier in the chapter.
You are no doubt familiar with Amazon.com as a shopping resource, and probably have purchased items from Amazon.com yourself. Amazon has made several of these shopping features available in a Web API for use in your own applications. What you may not know is that Amazon has also expanded its horizons by forming new companies, including one called Alexa Internet, Inc. Alexa offers a Web crawler that is currently the largest on the Web. Amazon has released a Web API that you can use to search Alexa. Amazon has also recently released a new Web API that allows you to create distributed queues for your applications. You can obtain a free subscriber ID that can be used with these Amazon APIs. This chapter will cover the following How to obtain a subscriber ID to use the Amazon APIs (E-Commerce Service and Alexa Web Information Service)
Set up an autoresponder to answer email inquiries that are generated from your auctions. An autoreponder is simply an email account that automatically replies with a pre-established message whenever it gets a message from someone. Think of it as an answering machine for an email account. The greeting you are accustomed to recording that 'answers' your phone calls is the equivalent of the 'email greeting' your customers will get when they send an email to your autoresponder account. You can set up a free autoresponder with a new Yahoo account or any number of other free email services. The autoresponder feature is sometimes called an out of office or vacation feature. I'll spend more time on autoresponders in my newsletter and on the resource page. Your autoresponder message will look something like this Next you should invite them to join your mailing list and give them an incentive to do so.
In addition to collecting e-mail addresses through your eBay store (discussed in the Manage your listing header section of this chapter), build your own mailing list. In every e-mail you send out, include a link to your eBay store and auctions, along with a button customers can click to sign up for your mailing Be careful with the e-mail addresses of your eBay customers. eBay is very protective of these and has specific rules about mass e-mails. You may send e-mails to customers offering them something similar to an item that they have already purchased from you through eBay on a case-by-case basis. To send an e-mail announcement to a batch of e-mail addresses, you need to ask these customers to sign up for your e-mail service. You must also give customers a chance to opt out at the bottom of each e-mail. This can get tricky, so I recommend using an e-mail list program to keep track of the names and addresses. These programs are called auto-responders, and most Web hosts offer them....
On the Email Marketing Summary Page, click Create Email. 2. On the Email Marketing Select A Template page, click the Type Of Email down arrow, and select the topic of the e-mail you're sending. Select one of the predesigned layouts or select Custom to create your own layout. Click Continue when finished. On the Email Marketing Create Email page, you compose your message by selecting options from several sections, as well as composing your text Under Recipients, select the mailing lists whose subscribers you want to send the message to. Also choose whether to limit the mailing to those who have made a certain quantity of purchases from you in the last 90 days. Mailing Lists ' Required Vintage Clothing (2 subscribers) Note You have already sent an email to this mailing list within the past 6 days. You may send to this mailing list again on Jun-12-200s. 7 Vintage Books ( 1 subscriber) Sports Magazines (1 subscriber)
Items sell for just cents on the dollar, and you can easily resell many of these items on eBay. A special kind of auctioneer handles these auctions. Look in the phone book under Auctioneers Liquidators and call local auctioneers' offices to get on mailing lists. This way, you'll always know when something good comes up for sale.
Many mailing lists and newsgroups permit self-promotion. Find a group that features your type of items and post a bit of promotion. This works best if you have your own e-commerce Web site. Your site, which should be the hub for your sales, can give you an identity and level of professionalism that makes your business more official in the eyes of buyers. In Chapter 8, I detail the ins and outs of business sites on the Web. When you have an eBay store, eBay allows you to send a number of e-mails to customers who request to be on your mailing list. Also, eBay will see to it that your store (and its listings) appears in searches on Google. Take a look at Figure 2-12, which shows my store in a Google search.
If you do nothing, you have opted into a mailing list. You have to uncheck the box to keep your name off the mailing list. According to the way the sentence is worded, you would expect to be emailed only about other purfumes that the retailer sells. But that might be a false assumption. First, the retailer might very well send you emails on cosmetics or even designer clothing. Second, the retailer might sell its mailing list, and then you might get email from another retailer in regard to purfume, or cosmetics, or whatever supposedly something at least vaguely related to purfume. In other words, the people on an opt-in mailing list supposedly have some interest in the type of products for which they opted in. How intense that interest might be is another question. Buying an Opt-In List If you buy an opt-in mailing list, you will want to make sure that the type of products opted for are close to what you're selling. An opt-in mailing list can be so vague that it's practically a spam...
Set up an autoresponder to answer email inquiries that are generated from your auctions. An autoresponder is simply an email account that automatically replies with a pre-established message whenever it gets a message from someone.
Don't forget your auction ads, eBay Store, About Me, independent website, and HTML email. They should have attractive asethetics too and be graphically related by a consistant visual theme. Although the auction management services provide attractive templates and eBay does too having your own unique integrated designs can make your brand shine.
This is the digital process of merging data into form letters (i.e., form email messages). You export the data from your database in a delimited text file. It is now ready to be used by a word processor or email program to merge into individual custom letters or email messages. Before you can mail-merge, you need to create a template letter or template email message. In the template are certain codes that designate where certain data will be merged into the letter or email message. The mail-merge function takes the template and merges selected data from one row (record) of data into the template, prints it or sends it, and then repeats for the next row. Thus, it creates a succession of custom letters or email messages. You can mail merge more than words. You can merge phrases, sentences, paragraphs, HTML mark-ups, and other text into a template. For instance, if you have the URL of an image (and the HTML image mark-up) in a database, you can merge that...
Promote your product or service to each subscriber with a pre-planned series of emailed letters that both teach and sell. This is an extremely powerful promotional method that you can set up using getresponse.com or other autoresponders. Again - I recommend you read the book Autoresponder Magic found on the resource page. This seven part course teaches you how to capture the power of autoresponders.
Hope that you don't have to do anything but the routine communications (form emails) for every buyer. But when problems arise that need special treatment (special communication), and they do occasionally, be ready to spring into action and exchange email messages.
As a seller, you want to send a communication as soon as possible to the high bidder after an auction. This is especially important if you run many auctions. You need an email follow-up system that works so well that you discourage unsolicited email messages from buyers. Individual email from customers is time-consuming to handle, inefficient, and unprofitable, particularly for transactions involving inexpensive items. Naturally, when a problem arises, you are happy to get it sorted out by communicating with your customers. But, otherwise, you don't have the time and energy to exchange email with them any more than is necessary.
You can also put your writings in an email document. Most email programs handle plain-text documents. You can copy and paste text out of Word right into an email message. The text will appear in the plaintext format (otherwise known as ASCII format). When you copy and paste into an email message, you need to review the text in the email message. You may need to make some adjustments to the formatting to make the text look right. Many email programs today accommodate HTML text too. That is, you can copy and paste from an HTML document into an email message to create an email message that looks like a webpage. As you probably know from the many HTML messages that you've received, this doesn't always work the way it's supposed to. It's something you have to do very carefully, or else find somebody knowledgeable to do it for you. The benefits to your readers of doing it this way is that it creates not only a more attractive email message but one that can include graphics, digital...
First, although you can't meet them, you can have an extensive telephone conservation with them, perhaps more conveniently than meeting them. Second, you can review a freelancer's track record on Elance. It's perhaps easier to do via Elance than it is to do for a local freelancer. Third, email and the capability to attach a file to an email message greatly improves business communication. It means that you can expect to pass back and forth with a freelancer almost any type of information required for productive work. In addition, there are dozens of ways for workers to collaborate via the Internet. In fact, working with people you've never met and never see face to face has become commonplace.
Start a free or fee based Newsletter and grow your subscriber list by encouraging your eBay auction visitors to join up via your about me page - keeping in mind all eBay policies while doing so. Sell products on eBay that attract the kind of readers that will want your newsletter. You could have a subscription list a mile long very quickly using this method. Once you have 100 or so subscribers start selling ad space in your newsletter and start promoting quality affiliate products. Don't worry about coming up with enough material for a newsletter- there are many ways to come up with content. I highly recommend that the newsletter be on a topic that is of interest to you. You will have to spend some time researching and learning about your topic, so picking a topic that you are passionate about will be important. If you sell a popular item on eBay (in any quantity) you could have a list of 100 subscribers in less than a week
A confusing number of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) flavours (ASDL, IDSL, SDSL, and more) are available nowadays, ranging from reasonably priced to out of sight. DSL, when it works as advertised, is fast and reliable. A DSL line depends on the reliability of your telephone service Crackling or unreliable phone lines can be a barrier to using it.
Internet marketing gurus will tell you that you need to start an ezine .or participate in discussion groups .or use bulk opt-in email .or do reciprocal How will you build a subscriber list Will it be verified opt-in or double opt-in How will you let your subscribers opt-out of your list Email lists that you belong to are also potentially CIM's. I say 'potentially' because there needs to be a mechanism in place that allows you to post - to ask questions and to respond to questions to make it a CIM. It's this 'excahnge' of information that makes it a 'marketplace'. If it's a list that you only can read messages sent from the owner- but are not allowed to post- then it really doesn't fit the definition of a CIM. There is a lot of 'indirect' economic exchanges on discussion boards and email lists - maybe more than you think. You can build a significant mailing list in a very short period of time using this method. You also need a way to allow people to opt-in to a mailing list or update...
Publish a lesson per week to teach others a specific skill. You can use a service like getresponse.com to automatically deliver a sequence of preplanned messages without you lifting a finger. You don't even have to type in your students email address - the students just sends an email to a preset address that you choose and then the subscriber starts getting the sequence of emails that you have already written in advance at predetermined intervals. I highly recommend the services of getresponse.com. If you aren't familiar with autoresponders and the many benefits of this simple concept take a look at the book on the resources page titled Autoresponder Magic to learn more about how to use an autoresponder with maximum results.
If you don't have a website, you may be able to store your photographs on your dial-up ISP's hard disk in the space reserved for you. Your ISP reserves space for your email messages. Most ISPs also enable you to use such space for webpages too. If you can put up a webpage, you can store photographs. Suppose your Web address is http llwww.isp.coml yours. You can create a folder named photos and upload all your photographs for eBay auction ads to that directory. The image markup will be
